Stephanie D. Abrahams, Guild President

My Fellow Students:

The Guild Council is the official body for student representation on the Mona Campus of The University of West Indies (UWI) which includes the main campus in Kingston, The Western Jamaica Campus (WJC) in Montego Bay and The United Theological College (UTC) also in Kingston. The Guild was established in 1951 as the Guild of Undergraduates and in 1996 was changed to the Guild of Students to include both undergraduate and graduate students, ensuring ALL registered students pursuing a course of study at UWI Mona are full members. THE Guild Council operates under a University Of The West Indies (Mona Campus) Guild of Students’ Constitution.

Elected Officers of The Council consists of -
President, 2 Vice Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer, Cultural Entertainment and Activities Chairman (CEAC), Games Committee Chairman (GCC), External Affairs’ Chairman (EAC), Public Relations’ Officer (PRO), Western Campus Chairman; Post Graduate Representative; Hall Chairs and Deputies, Faculty Representatives, Commuting Students’ Representative, and United Theological College Representative. There are also 2 appointed members of the Council -The Publications Committee Chair (PCC) and Librarian.

Your Guild Council works for you in numerous ways: promoting, fostering and developing the educational, social, cultural and economic interests of students to the University Community and on the national as well as the international level. As your student leadership your Guild Council is simply here to guide the process and act as go between of the Administration, Government and you. We must have one goal and that is to make our UWI outstanding and productive; therefore we must be of one accord. We all have to work together to ensure this. We all have to not only embrace our motto but truly believe and live it -“TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN”

While you are at our august institution, get involved. There are myriad of extracurricular activities and clubs and societies. Where ever your interest lies it can be fuelled – academia, artistic, athletics, culture, entertainment, outreach and politics.

Key components of The 2011-12, Guild Council include:
Communication –you will be informed and kept abreast of all matters and activities. The launch of this Website is an indication that we are serious in getting you involved.
Accountability and Transparency –Guild Councilors’ Reports will be posted to the Website for your scrutiny and Addressing Students’ Issues

I implore you to pass your comments, concerns, issues and queries on to your Hall Chairs, your Faculty Representatives and on to me. I invite you to stop any member of the Council you may see on Campus and express your queries, concerns or suggestions. You have a voice - use it, you have recourse - get it. . Our relationship must be that of a symbiotic body– UWI Guild of Students, making University Of The West Indies Mona your place to shine.

“Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation”. - John F. Kennedy

I charge you to hold your head high and keep your light shining to eclipse the darkness in our nations.
